Downtown Chicago Hotels
Downtown in Chicago is synonymous with the Loop. The Loop refers to a core of primarily commercial, governmental, and cultural buildings contained within a looping of elevated train tracks in the center city. Greater downtown Chicago extends beyond the Loop and is bounded by the Chicago River to the north and west, by Michigan Avenue to the east, and by Roosevelt Avenue to the south.
All About Downtown
Chicago began as a military fort and trading post in the late 1700s and quickly became a trading hub, thanks to its location near water. As rail and air transportation increased, Chicago became a hub for these, as well. The Great Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the city but Chicago quickly rebuilt itself, even using the burned rubble as landfill to create park space. The city celebrated its resurrection by hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893.
The Magnificent Mile, along Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, is a large commercial district with shopping, dining, cultural attractions, and numerous 4- and 5-star hotels. The Water Tower at 806 N. Michigan Ave. on “Mag Mile,” is one of the few buildings that survived the Great Fire of 1871, becoming a symbol of resilience for residents. It gained national landmark status in 1969. Navy Pier is somewhat similar to the Magnificent Mile with dining, shopping, and entertainment options spread out over 50 acres of waterfront. The Children’s Museum is housed here in the Family Pavilion.
Millennium Park hosts hundreds of free cultural events each year. It is also home to Lurie Garden as well as numerous sculptures, performing arts venues, and recreation areas. Chicago is also home to two zoos, the Lincoln Park Zoo and Brookfield Zoo. Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park is one of the world’s largest fountains and one of the city’s most popular outdoor attractions.
Chicago is filled with history and culture, as evidenced by its many museums. Some honor a specific figure, such as Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio or Jane Addams’ Hull House Museum. The Museum Campus, near Soldier Field, houses two science museums, the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium, as well as the Shedd Aquarium. The Art Institute of Chicago, on the edge of Millennium Park, holds ancient and contemporary treasures; while the Museum of Contemporary Art focuses on the latter. Lastly, the city itself is the focus at the Chicago History Museum on North Clark Street.
