The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people.
More About The Pavilion
When visiting Chicago, IL there are many landmarks and places which should be visited. One place in the city which all tourists should see before leaving town is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, which is located in Millennium Park off of Michigan Ave and Randolph Street in the Chicago CBD.
The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is a band shell outdoor music pavilion which is extremely popular with tourists and Chicago residents during the summer and fall months of May through October. The pavilion first went into development in 1999 and was completed and had a grand opening in July of 2004. The pavilion was developed by architect Frank Gehry, who has created a handful of other world renowned concert halls and pavilions across the world.
The pavilion holds approximately 11,000 people, of which 4,000 guests are provided an assigned seat and an additional 7,000 sit or stand in lawn seating located behind the assigned seats. During the warmer summer and fall months dozens of performances are put on at the pavilion each month. The types of events put on at the pavilion vary significantly, but often include a wide variety of free events. One of the most popular events held at the pavilion is the Chicago Gospel Music Festival, which is held each fall. In June, July, and August the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus put on shows up to three times per week, all of which are free for guests. This makes the event the world’s largest free classical music event.
Beyond free concerts and classical music, the theater is frequently used in other events as well. The pavilion frequently hosts a variety of modern rock bands and pop stars as well. Due to the relatively small size of the pavilion, the concerts held there provide a relatively intimate experience for music fans.
Ever since it has first opened, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion has remained quite popular with tourists. Many tourism magazines consider it the best place in Chicago to receive free entertainment. The immediate access to all of the excitement of Michigan Avenue, Grant Park, and downtown Chicago continues to make attending it an enjoyable experience.
