O'Hare Airport At A Glance

Chicago O'Hare International Airport is the third busiest airport in the world and is located outside of Chicago, Illinois. It is currently a hub for United Airlines and American Airlines and in 2010, almost 65 million passengers passed through the airport. It has daily nonstop flights to cities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and one-stop flights to cities in South America, Africa, and Australia.

O'Hare sits on the site once known as Orchard Field, formerly the home of the Douglas aircraft assembly plant, which was chosen as the location for a new airport in 1945. It was not named Chicago O'Hare International Airport until 1949, when it was renamed in honor of Lieutenant Commander Edward O'Hare, a naval aviator and Medal of Honor recipient from Chicago who died in World War II. The airport didn't officially open for commercial airline traffic until 1955, and it served 176,902 passengers in its first year. The airport continued to grow from there, and was the world's busiest airport for the majority of the 20th century.

While the airport is located in Chicago, it is technically part of one of Chicago's community areas, appropriately named O'Hare. Within this community area are office buildings, shopping, hotels, and dining options. However, as the airport is only about 17 miles outside of the city of Chicago, getting from O'Hare to downtown Chicago is easy. There are multiple transportation options. One of the easiest and cheapest options is taking the "L" train into the city. Other options include taxis and shuttles. Once in the city, there are a variety of interesting attractions. Go shopping on the famed Magnificent Mile, stroll along Lake Michigan, or take a boat ride down the Chicago River on a guided tour of the city and its history and architecture. While no trip would be complete without trying Chicago-style pizza and hot dogs, Chicago is equally well-known for its fine dining scene. For art history buffs, Chicago is also home to world class museums.
